Reports
Our AGM was held in November at Winslow Bowls Club and 48 members attended. I was very pleased and privileged to be nominated as President again, which I accepted. The past year has flown by and we are very lucky to have an amazing WI with lots going on.
April Benson from Aylesbury Women’s Refuge came and gave us an update on the Refuge and I am pleased to say that we will be supporting them again this Christmas in providing presents for the mums and children who will be spending Christmas at the Refuge. Thank you to our members who give so many gifts to these families.
Chis Richardson, President.

Theatre Group Report Nov 2023.
The theatre group arranged a visit to Aylesbury Waterside Theatre recently to see The Full Monty and what an excellent afternoon of ‘entertainment’ it was!
The audience was made up of mainly women, as you would expect but we had 2 husbands who joined us, who enjoyed the production as well.
It was very good the way 3 sets of scenery were moved around and used for the whole production and the cast got a well deserved standing ovation.
We are hoping to arrange a visit to see ‘Calendar Girls’ in March 2024 – as WI ladies – how can we not!

Blanket update - November 2023
Second Edition Book Club - July 2023
The Second Edition Book club are reading 'Grief Time' by Heather Bulpett. 'In a world where life, love & even reproduction are regulated by the State, Lyn reluctantly accepts that she must marry again just weeks after her husband's death. Grieftime is an innovative novel that embraces a world shaped by technology - a world without free will that surely none of us would want to live in. I was unsure about reading this book, as it is not one that I would choose, but it was easy to read and I wanted to find out what happened next!
Heather Bulpett was born in Wendover but sadly she died in 2013 before seeing Grieftime in print!

Wild Rose Flower Company 13 April
Our Gardening group had a great visit to Wild Rose, Town Farm, Hoggeston on Wednesday morning.
We were welcomed by Rosie who showed us her third of an acre flower beds. Tulips packed tight, ready to burst open - Daffodils, Narcissi. Summer planting was well on the way - in the beds, greenhouse and polytunnel. The refreshments were all homemade and were delicious.
So, thank you to Rosie and her team of 2 for making this visit very enjoyable.

Last Wednesday 23rd March, our garden group had a fabulous visit to NT Ascott House, to see the masses of daffodils and beautiful planting.
If you get a chance to visit you may not be as lucky with the weather, but it’ll still be worth going.

A Visit to Evenley Wood Garden
Our first garden visit for 2022 was to Evenley Wood Garden near Brackley. Ten of us were able to visit this privately owned 60 acre woodland garden containing a large collection of trees, shrubs and plants. The woodland is criss crossed with pathways creating glades in which shrubs such as magnolias, camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons grow. Underpinning the trees and shrubs are large sequential displays of hardy bulbs and plants throughout the seasons. A shallow stream runs through the garden which is a delight for children to paddle in!
At this time of year Evenley is a well known venue for swathes of more than 80 named varieties of snowdrops which thrive in this natural setting. We also saw early daffodils, aconites, patches of tiny brightly coloured cyclamen and glimpses of the first crocus and scillas.
We all agreed that it was a pleasant morning strolling around, enjoying each other’s company, taking photos and being enchanted at the first signs of Spring in this delightful garden. We were so lucky that although chilly the day was sunny with blue skies and fairly dry underfoot. We finished our visit with hot drinks and delicious food served al fresco at the cafe known as “Uncle Geordie’s Shed”.

Reading Group
WI Reading Group
Thanks to one member’s expertise with Zoom the Reading Group met nearly every month during the lockdowns. Not meeting face-to-face took a bit of getting used to and we came to realise how body language plays a big part even in literary criticism. Because the Bucks County Libraries were closed, the supply of sets of books dried up but we discussed whatever each of us had been reading that month: what a wealth of titles that brought up!
Now we are able to start again with live meetings and with a book set on loan and we intend to keep covering what else we have been reading too: it widens our scope. The reading group meets on the afternoon of the last Tuesday in the month. At the beginning of January 2022 there is a vacancy for someone else to join us so why don’t you try it out? VA.

Windmill Hill Waddesden
Venue for the Green Gym’s first walk of 2022
The first walk in 2022 for the Green Gym was to Windmill Hill on the Waddesden estate. We set off from the village and we’re able to walk on dry tarmac road the whole way.
The route is a public road so no need to be a NT member. Gentle slopes, lovely scenery with frequent glimpses of Waddesden’s rooftops and, at the top of the hill, fabulous views. The road ends at a contemporary building which houses Waddesden's archives which can be viewed by the public.

Garden Group Visit to Close Cottage, Soulbury - Thursday 16th May
Fifteen members and 1 guest had a delightful afternoon at Close Cottage in Soulbury, a 3 acre garden designed and cared for by Daniel Storey and Rachel Belsham. They created the garden 17 years ago from what was virtually just a field. There was a formal terraced garden, an orchard and paddock, an avenue of cherry trees (which unfortunately had finished flowering!), lawns, shrubs, ponds, vegetable beds and a wild flower meadow. At the end of our visit we sat on the terrace in glorious sunshine and enjoyed a cream tea - all homemade by Daniel.

Group Outing to Bath Thursday 9 May
Well, what a wonderful day. Good journey there and back. We had a bit of rain but it didn’t dampen our spirits… Plenty of free time and two tour guides who really new their stuff. Speaking on behalf of my little group - We learned a lot, walked a lot, talked a lot, laughed a lot, drank a lot and ate a lot... What more is there?
Thank you to Anne for organising yet another very successful Group Outing.

Spring Group Meeting at Great Horwood Tuesday 2 April.
A jolly good evening with an inspiring talk and cookery demonstration from Christine Wallace.
The hosts, Great Horwood seduced us with yummy cakes and biscuits and managed to win the competition shield back from Stewkley with a very pretty decorated Hen's egg.
Thank you to Great Horwood WI and Anne Liverseidge for convening the meeting.
